In reply to your Confidential Circular Despatch

of the 16th. of July, I have the honour to inform you that there

are no Germans and only 2 persons of recent German descent employed

in Shipping Firms in this Colony. Both persons referred to are in

the employment of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, one in the accounts

office of their large warehouses; and the other in their shipping

office. Both were born in Hongkong and are married to Englishwomen.

The second is Adjutant of the Hongkong Volunteer Corpe.

There are no grounds for apprehension in this

matter and no difficulty has arisen in connection with it.
